Flo Hyman was the captain of the 1984 Olympic volleyball team. This team went on to win the first U.S. medal in volleyball. In the 1981 World Cup, Hyman was named best hitter. She has been on the All-World Cup Team and recognized as one of the best in the world. Flo Hyman is known for her "dignity, spirit, and commitment to excellence. She pushed for the passage of the Civil Rights Restoration Act, which protects against sex discrimination in high school and college athletic programs. Also, she was a leader in promoting opportunities for women athletes (NGWSD, 1998).
Sadly, the one thing Hyman is most remembered for is her tragic death from Marfan's Syndrome, an inherited disease. Hyman was playing in Japan in 1986. During a substitution, she left the game, sat on the bench, and slid to the floor. She was dead, apparently from a heart attack. After an autopsy was performed, they found that Marfan's Syndrome killed the 6'5" athlete (Demak, 1986).
The most apt used term was “Hockie” by the Irish. Though the term was coined centuries ago, the word found its way through to the present generation. In the 17th and the early 18th century England, the game acquired a fiercely competitive and chaotic form. Villages would compete against their neighboring hamlets and there were nearly 100 players in one team. The game was a matter of pride and manhood; so the game acquired a dangerous form. The game would last for half a month and many players would end up injured and grievously hurt. The umpires were there but they were more of mute spectators, who would make a call only if a team asked them to.
FAmous Hockey Player
Gordon (Gordie) Howe
No list of great hockey players would be complete without the name of Gordon Howe, who spent 25 glorious seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Howe holds the record for the most goals (786), the most points in a career (1,809), and the most career assists (1,023).
Howe was born in 1928 at Floral, Sask., and played his last amateur season with the Saskatoon Lions juveniles and then played one year of minor pro with Omaha of the U.S. League before joining Detroit in the 1946-1947 season.
Gordie was known as one of the game's best all-around players, combining the arts of shooting, scoring, stickhandling, and all other hockey skills. He displayed an ability to shoot with equal dexterity from either side and had an effortless skating style. He was rough and tough, but never a bully.

Important sportperson of basketball
Our favourite sports
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we was an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries.
